ECOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF THE GREATER MONTREAL RIVER PROMENADE PROJECT

2020-2022

The dike located between Sainte-Catherine and Saint-Lambert measures nearly 13 km. It notably hosts a cycle path that connects Montreal to the South Shore. In order to provide even greater access to the population, the Metropolitan Community of Montreal (CMM) wishes to develop various recreational infrastructures on the dike.

As part of this project, T2 carried out the ecological characterization of the north side of the dike, i.e. the cycle path along the river. The following various components were characterized, mapped and analyzed: the 30 areas where rest stops and observation points will potentially be developed, as well as informal trails (7.2 km) and the windbreak hedge (13 km) . The field work made it possible to delimit and describe the wetlands and riparian environments, the terrestrial ecosystems, to carry out the search for floristic species with status as well as to delimit the colonies of the main invasive floristic species. The legislative and regulatory framework applicable to environmental components was also analyzed. Several development recommendations were made to aim to protect the natural environment, while promoting the visitor experience.
