However, these ecosystems are essential for the services they provide. Healthy ecosystems not only supply us with many essential resources, but also enable us to fight climate change and protect biodiversity.

The restoration of degraded ecosystems is therefore seen as a fundamental solution to protect the ecosystems that surround us and of which we are a part. This approach makes it possible to promote the regeneration of degraded environments and to slow biodiversity loss or even help increase it. This can be done, among other things, by recreating wetlands and bodies of water or by planting in contaminated soils to capture pollutants, to name but a few examples.

Recently, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Canada spoke clearly about the importance of ecosystem restoration: “Conserving, restoring and protecting ecosystems is also vital to our efforts in fighting climate change, protecting biodiversity and species at risk, and rebuilding a strong, sustainable economy.”

Click here to read the minister’s statement on World Environment Day 2021.

For several years, urban, industrial or agricultural development has caused a significant degradation of ecosystems, leading to various consequences, notably on biodiversity.
